MEL-DRAIN™ TOTAL-DRAIN™

PREFABRICATED SOIL DRAIN SYSTEM
The MEL-DRAIN TOTAL-DRAIN sheet drain system combines any regular MEL-DRAIN sheet drain section with the unique TOTAL-DRAIN section. In the TOTAL-DRAIN system, the regular sheet drain performs its normal function of water collection, while the TOTAL-DRAIN section provides both water collection and a high-profile section for water flow to the designed drainage exits. The TOTAL-DRAIN system provides three advantages over the use of perforated pipe:

  • The high-profile flow section has a larger open area than does perforated pipe to accept high flows from the sheet drain and from the surrounding soil.
  • The TOTAL-DRAIN section, with its manufactured transition between sheet drain and high-profile section, provides a secure flow path, which is not dependent on field installation.
  • The system is fast and easy to install. Eliminates select backfill required to give perforated pipe strength. Standard connectors and corner guards are available.

The TOTAL-DRAIN works with any of the MEL-ROL® drainage products.

TOTAL-DRAIN is a two-part, prefabricated geocomposite drain consisting of a formed 24″ high PVC core covered on one side with a non-woven, needle-punched polypropylene filter fabric. The top section is 12″ of 7/16″ core for water collection. The bottom section is 12″ of 1″ thick for water collection and horizontal water flow to designated exits. The fabric allows water to pass into the drain core while restricting the movement of soil particles, which might clog the core. The core allows the water to flow to designated drainage exits. Full-coverage protection is provided to waterproofing materials.

DRAIN ATTACHMENT METHODS
For attaching drain to waterproofing material, concrete, or wood, several methods may be used, including metal stick pins, nails driven through washers or wood lathing, construction adhesives, or double-sided tape. Discuss material compatibility with waterproofing supplier before using adhesive. Typically, any method used for attaching waterproofing protection board will work for drain. For attaching drain to bare earth, 4 – 8″ anchor pins with washers work well.

Clean Wall/Waterproof/Insulate
Clean wall and apply waterproofing or insulation if required.

Installing First Row of Drain
(TOTAL-DRAIN Row)
The first row of drain to be installed is the TOTAL-DRAIN at the bottom of the wall. The drain should sit on top of the footing with the high-profile part of the drain at the bottom to provide high lateral water flow.

If not using MEL-DRAIN rolled matrix drainage for full water coverage, close the top end of the drain to prevent soil intrusion by folding the fabric behind the drain. Close the high-profile section with 3″ underground tape.

UNIVERSAL TEE FITTINGS

mel-drain-total-drain3

Going Around Corners … Bend drain to make inside corners. For outside corners, cut the low-profile core flush with corner and tape edges. Slit fabric on high-profile section, bend around corner, and place corner guard with fabric over slit of high-profile drain. Secure with underground tape.

Installing Next Roll of TOTAL-DRAIN … To attach the next roll of TOTAL-DRAIN drain, cut one row of low-profile dimples from each end of the two sections to be joined. Do not cut fabric. Interlock one row of the high-profile section and secure connection. Overlap fabric and apply 3″ wide underground tape from top to bottom of joint to prevent soil intrusion.

Connecting MEL-DRAIN Rolled Matrix Drainage to TOTAL-DRAIN … If full wall drainage is required, attach MEL-DRAIN rolled matrix drainage above TOTAL-DRAIN sheet drain. MEL-DRAIN rolled matrix drainage may be installed either horizontally or vertically. When installed vertically, the edge of the core with flange should be facing direction opposite of TOTAL-DRAIN water flow. Fold back fabric at top of TOTAL-DRAIN and rest (or shingle) MEL-DRAIN rolled matrix drainage on top of TOTAL-DRAIN core flange. Cover fabric seam (facing down) and secure with 3″ tape.

PVC WATERSTOPS

DESCRIPTION
Premium PVC WATERSTOPS are manufactured from premium quality thermoplastic resins, which are plasticized and stabilized for controlled properties. For consistent quality, no reclaimed PVC is used. They are extruded in a variety of thicknesses, widths, and centre bulb sizes. The most-used sizes are illustrated in this data sheet, but a variety of other sizes are available.

“T”, “X,” and “L” spliced sections are available on special order.

USES
PVC WATERSTOPS are used in the prevention of the passage of water through joints of liquid-containing or liquid-excluding structures, foundation walls, tunnels, and similar concrete construction. Other applications include swimming pools, reservoirs, water and sewage treatment plants, retaining walls, culverts, bridge abutments, and dams.

FEATURES/BENEFITS

  • PVC compound has unsurpassed qualities of ease of handling and low temperature flexibility.
  • Centre bulb accommodates limited shear movement.
  • Multi-rib web design anchors the waterstop securely in the concrete.
  • Supplied in coils, which are easily handled, flexible, and may be bent around corners or formed in curves as required.
  • Can be jobsite spliced with specifically designed, thermostatically controlled, electric splicing irons.
  • Not susceptible to oxidation or fatigue deterioration, as with metal or rubber.
  • Resists attack by acids (except organic acids), alkalis, chlorinated water, seawater, and natural salts – even diesel oil.
  • Does not set up electrolysis with structural or reinforcing steel and will not discolour concrete.

PRECAUTIONS
Proper installation is essential. Voids, honeycombing, segregation of the mix, or any condition which leads to greater concrete permeability are to be avoided.

APPLICATION
Secure the waterstop in place, using split forms or other suitable method, to ensure correct positioning and proper embedment of the waterstop in the concrete. Position the bulb exactly in the middle of the joint.

Vibrate the concrete around the waterstop thoroughly to eliminate voids or honeycombs and to ensure effective bonding of the concrete to the waterstop ribs.

Before second pour, place copper-clad steel rings as far as possible from the outer edge of the waterstop. Slip #16 gauge tie wires through the rings and secure to the forms or to the reinforcing steel. Provide sufficient number of ties to maintain the waterstop in position during the second pour.

pvc-waterstops-canada-details

Splicing can be accomplished by softening the ends of PVC WATERSTOPS to melting point 200° C ± 10° C (392° F ± 50° F) over an indirect heat source. Thermostatically controlled, Teflon-covered welding irons are recommended (available from W. R. MEADOWS). When the plastic begins to melt, place the ends together in direct alignment and hold firmly in position until the plastic cools (about 20 seconds).

pvc-waterstops-canada-tech-data

pvc-waterstops-canada-standard-profiles

SELECTION
Select width which will withstand the hydrostatic pressures on the joint. (See table.) Consider the dimensions of the joints at the time of pouring and the expected movement between the segments. Types less than 152.4 mm (6″) wide are not recommended for joints more than 12.7 mm (1/2″) wide at time of pouring. PVC WATERSTOPS must be correctly positioned for maximum efficiency. Select a type that is thick enough to remain positioned during the concrete pours. Thinner types can be wired to surrounding reinforcement. Heavier sections are recommended for larger structures that are not reinforced.

floor-top-stg-concrete-floor-prodNote 1 – FLOOR-TOP STG PRIMER may be used in some applications where the concrete substrate may not be too porous. Use FLOOR-TOP STG PRIMER diluted at an application rate of 200 ft.2/gal. (5 m2/L). Two coats of the diluted primer will be required. Always perform a test in a sample area if there is a concern on primer type suitability. If the existing concrete is not properly sealed, the performance, appearance, and adhesion of FLOOR-TOP STG will be compromised.

Note 2 – The wood floor must meet the requirements of “engineered approved wood subfloors” such as the National Floor Covering Association’s floor covering specification manual. The wood floor must be sound and have no movement due to deflection. Such subfloor wood underlayments include APA-rated Group 1 exterior grade plywood, CC-plugged or better, conforming to US Product Standard PS-1 or COFI-Classified SELECT or exterior grade plywood conforming to CSA-0121 Standard for Douglas Fir. In addition, the use of metal or synthetic lath is required.

Note 3 – Even though steel is a suitable substrate when properly primed with an epoxy primer, such as the REZI-WELD LV sand broadcast method, any movement due to flexing and/or expansion or contraction due to temperature variations may result in loss of adhesion and cracking.

Follow all recommendations as outlined on the technical data sheet for FLOOR-TOP STG. This is only a guide for reviewing the appropriateness of the primer; this is not an application guide, nor a stand-alone technical guide, but should be used by a professional to aid in determination of primer type.

APPLICATION
Surface Preparation Existing (Old) Concrete: Concrete surface must be clean and dry with all stains, oil, grease, dust, and dirt removed prior to application. We recommend ULTRITE® DEGREASER from W. R. MEADOWS for cleaning.

New Concrete: SEAL CURE-309-25 should be applied when surface water has completely disappeared and the concrete surface will not be marred by walking workmen.

Application Method Use a sprayer, such as a Chapin 19049, or short-nap roller to apply a uniform film. Avoid puddling in low areas. If puddles occur, brush or roll them out. A standard industrial-grade sprayer, equipped with a neoprene hose and gaskets, as well as a Chapin 6-5797 spray nozzle (or equivalent) is recommended for best results.

For optimum performance, apply first coat at 600 ft.2/gal. After the first coat has thoroughly dried, apply a second coat at 600 ft.2/gal. NOTE: The second coat should be applied at a right angle.

Surface temperature of the concrete must be between 50° – 90° F (10° – 32° C).

Drying Time SEAL CURE-309-25 dries quickly. Drying times may be extended depending on application rate, temperature, humidity, and project conditions. Restrict foot traffic for at least four hours. Twelve hours is preferable.

Cleanup Application equipment should be cleaned promptly after use with xylene or toluene.

PRECAUTIONS
DO NOT DILUTE. FOR EXTERIOR APPLICATION ONLY. Surfaces treated with SEAL CURE-309-25 may become slippery under certain conditions.

SEAL CURE-309-25 should not be applied during high temperature conditions in direct sunlight. These conditions cause rapid evaporation, which does not allow the film to form properly. Under these conditions, the film may peel, bubble, and/or turn white (blush). SEAL CURE-309-25 should not be applied to concrete containing excessive moisture. Entrapped moisture in a solvent-based sealer may cause the film to peel and/or turn white (blush).

SEAL CURE-309-25 is a membrane-forming sealer. All membrane-forming sealers may darken concrete or magnify imperfections caused by variations in the porosity and/or finishing of the concrete.

SEAL CURE-309-25 may be used on colored concrete, but mottling may occur. Do not use on dense or non-porous surfaces, i.e. brick, stone, etc. Concrete containing calcium chloride will remain dark longer when treated with SEAL CURE-309-25. Concrete floors properly cured with SEAL CURE-309-25 meet section 8.9 “Adhesion of Tile Cements” of ASTM C 1315. For other specifications, secure the approval of the paint or resilient flooring manufacturer before applying SEAL CURE-309-25. ASTM C 1315, Class B products may discolor under certain conditions. The specifier and user shall determine the suitability of product for specific applications and assume all responsibility in connection therewith.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Prolonged inhalation of vapors in excess of permissible exposure limits may result in symptoms of transient central nervous system depression. Direct contact with the product may result in irritation of the skin and eyes. Product vapors may also cause irritation. SEAL CURE-309-25 is combustible. Remove ignition sources prior to use. Empty containers may hold combustible vapors. Handle empty containers as combustible liquids. In the event of a spill, contain the product; apply absorbents and place in sealed containers. In the event of a fire, contain all run-off water. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety information.
