PATCH-PRIME
Exposed Steel Primer

DESCRIPTION
PATCH-PRIME Exposed Steel Primer is a polymer modified, cementitious based, two component material consisting of a dry powder and a liquid component packaged as a unit in a mixing container.

USE
Provides corrosion protection for all types of embedded steel, i.e. rebar, anchor bolts, bearing plates etc., exposed during preparation for concrete repairs where a cementitious repair material will be applied . . . horizontal, vertical or overhead. Replaces smooth, non-absorbent, epoxy rustproofing coatings. Suggested for use with all W. R. MEADOWS’ cementitious Patching Compounds.

FEATURES

  • Contains a migrating corrosion inhibitor.
  • Non-toxic water-borne mixture.
  • Excellent adhesion to steel, concrete and repair mortars.
  • Easy to apply by brush.
  • Easy water clean-up after use.
  • Alkalinity similar to concrete.
  • If applied to concrete surfaces adjacent to rebar it will not act as a bond breaker.
  • Coating is vapour permeable.

CAUTION
Do not apply to unclean, rusty steel.
Do not apply when rain is imminent or when the temperature is expected to be below 4°C (40°F) within 24 hours.
At temperatures above 32°C (90°F) the pot and work life is severely limited.

One unit is sufficient for 30.5 m (100 ft.) of #4 (12.7 mm, 1/2") rebar, 2 coats
Packaging 5 litre plastic mixing pail - includes:
2 plastic bags, approximately 2.18 kg
(4.8 lbs.) each of premixed powder
1 x 1 litre jug of liquid component
Storage Keep from freezing.
Should liquid component freeze it becomes unusable and must be discarded.
Keep lid on liquid container and on mixing pail in storage to keep powders dry.
Shelf life is 12 months in a dry, cool area.

APPLICATION
Preparation
Sandblasting and/or waterblasting is recommended to remove all rust, grease, etc.

Mixing
1. Remove the two bags of powders and the container of liquid from the 5 litre mixing pail container. Pour the liquid component into the 5 litre pail and then add the bags of the premixed dry component into the pail and mix, using a drill with a mixing paddle, to a smooth lump-free brushable consistency. Allow to sit for from 3 to 5 minutes and then re-mix.

2. Half unit amounts may be mixed - place 1/2 of the liquid component into the mixing pail, (the container is marked to show the 1/2 unit level) and add one of the bags of powders and mix as above. Note - clean out the mixing pail with water and return the balance of liquid and powder components to the re-sealable pail for future use.

3. Mix only the amount of material that can be applied within 45 minutes after mixing. Discard any mixed material not used within this time.

Primer Application
Apply the first coat to the cleaned steel, using a stiff brush, as soon as possible after the steel is cleaned. Let this first coat dry for approximately 10 to 15 minutes and then apply the second coat.

Curing
Allow primer coat to dry and stiffen for 1 to 2 hours and then place repair material.

Repair Compound Placement
The placement of the repair compound may follow initial curing or be delayed as necessary. It is however important that the primer be kept clean during any delay.

Clean-Up
Clean tools immediately after use with water. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.

Proper application is the responsibility of the user. Field visits by W. R. MEADOWS’ personnel are for the purpose of making technical recommendations only, and are not to supervise or provide quality control on the job-site.

SAFETY & TOXICITY
Prolonged contact with skin is not recommended, use rubber gloves to avoid sensitivity to Portland cement. Avoid contact with the eyes, goggles are recommended. Wash thoroughly with water. See product label and Material Safety Data Sheet for additional information. Read and follow all safety precautions.
