DESCRIPTION
#158 is a single-component, cold-applied rubber-asphalt
joint sealing compound. It is applied
under pressure through an extruding nozzle or
from a caulking gun for complete joint filling.
USES
#158 cold-applied rubberized-asphalt sealer was
developed for use in sealing horizontal
contraction and dummy joints in pavements and
curbs and gutters to prevent the penetration of
water and incompressibles into the joint. The
product is for use in sealing deep joints up to 1/4"
(6.35 mm) in width or shallow joints with a 1/2"
(12.7 mm) depth maximum.

ASTM D 1850
Federal Specification SS-S-158 A
PACKAGING
50 lb. (22.7 kg) Pails
455 lb. (206.4 kg) Drums
COVERAGE
65.1 lb./ft.³ (1045 kg/cm³). A 1/4" x 2"
(6.35 x 50.8 mm) joint will require 22.7 lb./100
lineal feet (33.5 kg/100 m).
APPLICATION
Surface Preparation … Joints to be sealed with
#158 must be dry and cleaned of all dust, dirt,
laitance or any foreign material. When re-sealing
old joints, all sealing material must be removed
and the joint interfaces cleaned by sandblasting or
mechanical abrading. All joints should be cleaned
with compressed air just prior to the sealant
application. To control joint depth and sealant
usage, KOOL-ROD™ backer rod from W. R.
MEADOWS may be inserted into the joint
opening.
Application Method … #158 is ready to use
direct from the container. A professional bulk
caulking gun can be used for smaller joint sealing
operations. In larger installations, use a heavy-duty,
20 to 1 ratio flange bulldog pump with
follower plate and extension nozzle. For best
results, fill the joint to 1/8" (3.18 mm) below the
pavement surface. Avoid bridging or leaving air
pockets in the sealant. Pavement and air
temperature should be 40º F (4º C) or higher for
application of #158. In cold weather, store in a
heated warehouse to reduce viscosity for ease of
application.
PRECAUTIONS
HANDLE AS A FLAMMABLE PRODUCT. DO
NOT DILUTE. FOR EXTERIOR USE ONLY.
#158 is not intended or recommended for use in
joints subject to foot traffic, swimming pool joints
or joints subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Once
applied, #158 should be covered or protected until
the skin forms. Product is recommended for use
in sealing deep joints up to 1/4" (6.35 mm) in
width or shallow joints having a 1/2" (12.7 mm)
maximum depth. Read and follow application
information, precautions and Material Safety Data
Sheet information.
