Green Roofing 101: Green Roofs From the Ground Up (Virtual AIA)

Green Roofing 101: Green Roofs From the Ground Up
Host: Zach Matiko
Green roofs are more than a design trend — they’re layered roof assemblies that require the right system type, detailing, and long-term planning to perform successfully. This AIA virtual course covers essential green roofing concepts, common system types, and the role of key components like membrane protection and vegetation-free zones. You’ll learn how the layers work together to support durable, high-performing vegetated roof systems, with practical design considerations focused on long-term performance.
The course also addresses maintenance planning as a critical part of long-term success, along with the broader benefits green roofs can provide. Topics include stormwater management and improved occupant experience, plus potential advantages such as extended waterproofing service life, reduced building energy load, urban heat island mitigation, and sound attenuation. This program is registered with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education System (CES) and is approved for Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) credit. Participants will earn one (1) Learning Unit (LU) upon completion.
