This document has been created as an addendum to our HYDRALASTIC 836 and HYDRALASTIC 836 SL technical data sheets to provide information regarding the recommended method of priming. For porous substrates, surface defects and where air and/or moisture release due to ambient and direct sun exposure may cause pinhole or blister problems to occur in the applied membrane, priming the substrate prior to application of HYDRALASTIC 836 or HYDRALASTIC 836 SL is recommended. Discovery of these issues is generally revealed in the mockup.
Following is the typical installation instructions recommended by W. R. MEADOWS. However, it is important to review each application as there may be situations that may require this procedure to be modified based on the project requirements. If this situation arises, please contact W. R. MEADOWS Technical Service.
The recommended primers for use with HYDRALASTIC 836 or HYDRALASTIC 836 SL are REZI-WELD™ LV and REZI-WELD LV STATE epoxy from W. R. MEADOWS. And for vertical applications ONLY, REZI-WELD 1000. Please read and understand all instructions on the REZI-WELD LV, REZI-WELD LV STATE or REZI-WELD 1000 data sheet and SDS prior to use.
Surface Preparation … All surfaces to be primed must be free of standing water and completely clean of dirt, rust, curing compounds, grease, oil, paint, waxes, and other materials that would prevent an optimal bond. Concrete should be prepared by mechanical abrading or grit-blasting to a sound and profiled surface. Vacuum or blow dust away with oil-free compressed air.
Mixing … Condition all components to 60º – 85º F (16º – 29º C) for 24 hours prior to use. Premix each component. Mechanically mix at slow speed (600 – 900 rpm) using a drill and Jiffy® Mixer or until completely mixed while scraping the sides to ensure complete blending of components. Avoid air entrapment. Scrape the sides of the container to ensure complete blending of components. Pot life will decrease as the ambient temperature and/or mass size increases.
Apply the primer at an application rate of 100 ft.²/gal (2.66 m²/L), 16 mils thick with a squeegee and roller. Ensure that the applied primer forms a visually continuous film that is uniform and pinhole-free. Allow the primer to become tack-free (usually 2 – 4 hours after application). Apply the HYDRALASTIC 836 or HYDRALASTIC 836 SL within eight hours of application of the primer at 75º F (24º C). DO NOT REDUCE with petroleum solvents, such as mineral spirits or xylene.
Application of the REZI-WELD LV or REZI-WELD LV STATE is not recommended for vertical surfaces due to the thin consistency making it difficult to achieve the required application rate and minimum 16 mils cured thickness. Apply REZI-WELD 1000 for priming vertical surfaces. Follow all other stated application and limitation requirements in this guideline.
Mix complete units only. REZI-WELD LV or REZI-WELD LV STATE are not recommended for use when the concrete and air temperature is below 40º F (4º C) or will drop below 40º F (4º C) within 24 hours. Do not apply when the ambient and/or substrate temperature is above 110º F (43º C). Do not use on-grade or where a water vapor issue may be present.
