APPLICATION
Melting … SEALTIGHT CJA should be melted in an oil-jacketed melter-applicator equipped with an agitator and separate temperature thermometers for oil bath and melting vat. Sealing may be done at air temperatures of 40º F (4º C) and higher.
Surface Preparation … The joints and cracks to be sealed must be clean and dry. Dust, dirt, and laitance should be removed prior to application. Proper routing should be slightly larger than the existing crack/joint to ensure proper adhesion to sidewalls.
NOTE: Application of sealant into frozen or wet pavement will result in loss of bond and premature failure of the sealant.
Application Method … SEALTIGHT CJA should be applied to the existing joint face prior to placing the adjoining mat using a pre-determined thickness (usually 1/8” to 3/16”). Utilizing the heat from the newly placed mat, the material will adhere to both surfaces, causing a waterproof bond, a reduction in air intrusion, and increase the overall durability of the newly formed pavement joint. This application method is one of the most time efficient and cost-effective methods to form an effective bond, as well as to reduce the negative effects of thermal expansion and contraction at the construction joint.
PRECAUTIONS
Service life at recommended temperatures is approximately 12 – 15 hours. Application life may be extended by adding fresh material as adhesive is applied and the quantity in the kettle decreases. SEALTIGHT CJA hot-pour joint adhesive can be reheated once within the prescribed safe heating temperature limits. Repeated reheating may result in material degradation or gelling in the melter. When the application life has been exceeded, SEALTIGHT CJA will thicken, become stringy, and may gel. If this occurs, remove the sealant immediately from the kettle and discard.
