LIN-SEAL®
Penetrating and Anti-Spalling Compound
DESCRIPTION
LIN-SEAL penetrating and anti-spalling compound is a specification-grade formulation of boiled linseed oil in mineral spirits. LIN-SEAL is specifically formulated to reduce spalling and scaling of concrete. This type of penetrating compound is recommended by many state Departments of Transportation for prolonging the life cycle of concrete exposed to water, de-icing salts, and other destructive materials. However, good concrete and concreting practices should be used, as LIN-SEAL will not be effective on improperly mixed, placed, or cured concrete.
USES
LIN-SEAL is ideal for application on Portland cement concrete bridge decks, parking garage decks and ramps, or any other DOT concrete surface exposed to water, de-icing sales, or other destructive substances. LIN-SEAL increases the durability of concrete to prolong its service life. LIN-SEAL may also be applied on wood to seal, protect, and extend the life of the protected wood. The product is intended for DOT use.
FEATURES/BENEFITS
- Protects concrete surfaces against over-exposure to de-icing salt, water, and other destructive materials.
- Increases the durability of the concrete.
- Reduces spalling and scaling of concrete surfaces.
- Treated surfaces are ready for use four hours after application.
- Ready to use.
- Seals, protects, and extends the life of wood.
- Easy to apply … cleans up quickly with mineral spirits.
- VOC compliant.
PACKAGING
5 Gallon (18.93 Liter) Pails
55 Gallon (208.20 Liter) Drums
COVERAGE
Apply at the rate of approximately 300 ft.2/gal. (7.36 m2/L). A second application at approximately 600 ft.2/gal. (14.73 m2/L) is recommended for increased protection and spall prevention.
NOTE: Use of fillers, extenders or additives in the concrete mix may result in higher porosity. To achieve proper protection, adjust coverage rates to compensate for the resulting penetration.
SHELF LIFE
When stored indoors in original, unopened containers at temperatures between 40° – 90° F (4° – 32° C), optimum performance and best use is obtained within two years of date of manufacture.
SPECIFICATIONS
- AASHTO M 233
- ASTM D235, Type 1
Maximum copper corrosion rating: 2 - ASTM D260
- Meets numerous state specifications for anti-spalling compounds.
- Complies with National AIM, LADCO, and OTC states under Phase I OTC maximum allowable VOC requirements.

APPLICATION
Surface Preparation … Surfaces to be sealed must be clean and dry. Remove all dirt, oil, grease, curing compounds and other substances that would prevent the proper penetration of the LIN-SEAL.
Application Method … Apply at temperatures between 40 – 90° F (4 – 35° C). New concrete should be cured a minimum of 14 days (28 days preferred) before application. Apply using an industrial sprayer. A Chapin 19049 sprayer with a spray nozzle that produces a flow of 0.5 GPM (1.9 LPM) under 40 psi (0.276 MPa) of pressure (or equivalent) is recommended. AVOID PUDDLING in low areas. If puddles occur, brush or roll them out. Annual reapplication may be necessary.
Cleanup … Use mineral spirits or other suitable petroleum solvent to clean tools and equipment. Materials soaked with linseed oil (rags, paper towels, absorbents, etc.) may spontaneously catch fire if improperly disposed. (See precaution below.)
PRECAUTIONS
IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE, ALL MATERIALS COMING IN CONTACT WITH LIN-SEAL (RAGS, PAPER TOWELS, ABSORBENTS, ETC.) MUST BE PUT INTO A WATER-FILLED CONTAINER, AND THEN THE CONTAINER MUST BE TIGHTLY SEALED. Drying of products containing linseed oil results in the generation of heat which may result in the ignition of combustible materials, such as rags, paper towels, etc.
LIN-SEAL IS FOR EXTERIOR APPLICATION ONLY. DO NOT DILUTE WITH ANY OTHER PRODUCTS OR LIQUIDS.
Do not apply LIN-SEAL if the air temperature or the temperature of the concrete is below 40˚ F (4˚ C).
Do not use on colored concrete. Do not use on densely troweled or non-porous surfaces, or where darkening of the concrete is undesirable. Do not use on surfaces that are not uniform in porosity, i.e. brick, stone, masonry, etc. Concrete containing calcium chloride will remain dark longer when treated with LIN-SEAL. Not recommended for residential use.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Avoid direct contact with this material, as it may cause irritation of the skin and eyes. Product vapors may cause transient central nervous system depression. LIN-SEAL should not be utilized in locations where food items are present. Refer to Safety Data Sheet for complete health and safety information.
LIN-SEAL is a combustible product. All ignition sources should be removed prior to use.
