This document has been created as an addendum to our SEALTIGHT MASTIC technical data sheet to provide information regarding the recommended installation procedure.
Following are the typical installation instructions recommended by W. R. MEADOWS. However, it is important to review each application as there may be situations that may require this procedure to be modified based on the project requirements. If this situation arises, please contact the W. R. MEADOWS pavement maintenance division.
SEALTIGHT MASTIC is a hot-applied, aggregate-filled, polymer-modified pavement repair material designed for use on asphalt and portland cement concrete pavements. It is intended for the repair of distresses larger than those typically addressed with crack or joint sealants.
Typical applications include sealing and filling wide cracks and joints, repairing potholes and utility cuts, performing skin patch repairs, and leveling bridge approaches or faulted areas. When properly applied, SEALTIGHT MASTIC forms a flexible, durable, and traffic-resistant bond.
EQUIPMENT & HEATING
SEALTIGHT MASTIC must be heated in an appropriate melter designed for hot-applied, aggregate-filled materials. The melter should include:
- Oil-jacketed heating system
- Thermostatic temperature control
- Agitation system to maintain uniform consistency
Heat transfer oil temperature:
450°F–525°F (232°C–274°C)
Application temperature: 375°F–400°F (190°C–204°C)
- Begin agitation once material has sufficiently melted
- Maintain continuous agitation during application
- Stop agitation before adding additional material
- Do not use a normal hot-pour sealant pump; aggregate will damage this type of equipment
SURFACE PREPARATION
All repair areas must be:
- Clean
- Dry
- Free of dust, dirt, laitance, and debris
Use oil-free compressed air, mechanical cleaning, or other appropriate methods to ensure proper surface preparation. Proper cleaning is essential for achieving optimal adhesion.
PAVEMENT CONDITIONS
- Apply to sound, dry pavement surfaces
- Avoid application when moisture, frost, or contaminants are present
- Preheating may be required in cold conditions to ensure a dry surface and proper adhesion
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Heat SEALTIGHT MASTIC to the recommended application temperature.
- Pour material directly into the prepared repair area or transfer using approved application equipment.
- Immediately level and smooth the material using steel-heated tools specific to mastic application. Do not use standard hot-pour sealant tools.
- Ensure the repair is flush with the surrounding pavement surface.
For deeper repairs, material may be installed in lifts, allowing each layer to cool before applying the next.

COOLING & TRAFFIC OPENING
SEALTIGHT MASTIC cools rapidly after placement.
- Allow material to cool until it has sufficiently solidified
- The repaired area can be opened to traffic immediately after cooling
Cooling time will vary based on ambient conditions and repair depth.
APPLICATION LIFE & LIMITATIONS
- Service life at application temperature: 12–15 hours
- Material may be reheated once within recommended temperature limits as long as new material is being added during re-heat process
- Repeated reheating may result in material degradation
Do not use degraded material.
EQUIPMENT CLEAN-UP
- Clean equipment following manufacturer recommendations
- Use approved solvents where necessary
- Dispose of waste materials in accordance with local regulations
STORAGE
- Store in original packaging
- Keep materials dry and protected from weather exposure
- Maintain packaging integrity until use
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
SEALTIGHT MASTIC is applied at elevated temperatures. Follow all safety guidelines:
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Avoid contact with hot material
- Use caution when loading melters to prevent splashing
- Avoid inhalation of fumes
- Implement proper traffic control measures
- Review SDS prior to use
