W. R. MEADOWS realized that various technologies, many of which are still used today, were not working. Expensive restoration projects were being undertaken with concrete repair mortars that had a tendency to excessively shrink, resulting in cracking and loss of bond. This cracking allowed the ingress of chlorides back into the repair zone to re-attack the embedded rebar … premature failure of the repaired area was imminent. The cost to contractors and owners for these premature failures was and continues to be significant.
Also, if not more important, the industry, through a coordinated research program, had determined that a successful structural repair required the repair mortar to behave like the host concrete. The similarities of the two materials would allow for proper load transfer and thus avoid point load transfer issues, which led to many long-term problems with past structural repairs.
The MEADOW-CRETE family of structural repair mortars was developed to combat this industry problem. Utilizing the latest technologies, the MEADOW-CRETE line of mortars were designed to have these properties:
- Exceptionally low shrinkage, shrinkage compensated
- Increased tensile capacity through polymer modification and fiber reinforcement
- Increased “toughness” and reduced permeability through the use of mica-silica and polymer
- Polymer-modified to enhance not only flexural strength, but also bond strength.
- Active protection of embedded rebar (migrating corrosion inhibitor)
- Physical properties similar to native concrete to ensure compatibility in truly structural repairs
