SURFACE PRIMER/CONDITIONER
Asphalt Emulsion Primer for Hot-Applied Membranes
DESCRIPTION
SURFACE PRIMER/CONDITIONER is a water-based, ready-to-use, asphaltic emulsion primer which conditions the surface to provide a firm bond for hot-applied asphalt coatings. It is a fast drying, non-tracking primer for asphaltic based materials.
USES
SURFACE PRIMER/CONDITIONER simultaneously prepares and dustproofs new and old and vertical and horizontal surfaces in one easy, economical operation. The product is designed for surfaces to receive a hot-applied rubberized asphalt waterproofing membrane, such as HRM 714 from W. R. MEADOWS. Suitable substrates are structural concrete and metals.

APPLICATION
Surface Preparation … All surfaces to receive primer must be clean, dry, smooth, and free of grease, oil, rust or scale. Fill all voids and remove sharp protrusions. When used on concrete, concrete should be cured at least 72 hours.
NOTE: Metal surfaces must also be clean, dry, and free of oils, loose paint, rust, or other contaminants. SURFACE PRIMER/CONDITIONER in conjunction with other W. R. MEADOWS waterproofing systems are not designed for use on metal decks; incidental metal is allowed.
Mixing … For optimum performance, gentle mixing or agitation is recommended. DO NOT THIN.
Application Method … Apply SURFACE PRIMER/CONDITIONER in fair weather when the surface and air temperatures are 40º F (4º C) and rising. Apply primer with a roller or brush at a coverage rate of 150 – 200 ft.2/gal. (3.7 – 4.9 m2/L). Avoid over-application. Apply only to the area to be covered with membrane during the working day. Areas not covered in 24 hours must be re-applied. Avoid over-application and building up of surface film.
Drying Time … Typically dries in less than an hour depending on jobsite conditions (temperature, relative humidity, wind, dew point etc.). Avoid foot traffic until tack-free.
Cleanup … Cleanup can be accomplished with soap and water prior to drying. Once dry, use mineral spirits, VM&P naphtha, or other suitable petroleum solvent.
PRECAUTIONS
Do not apply primer when rain is imminent, or on damp or frost-covered surfaces. Primer may blister when applied in direct sun or hot days due to outgassing from the concrete substrate. This blistering is superficial and will not affect the performance of the primer. Avoid allowing primer to puddle – this will lengthen drying time. Do not dilute; use as is. KEEP FROM FREEZING.
A small test application is always recommended prior to full-scale application.
Adhesion of primers on exterior grade-oriented strand board (OSB), fire-rated and/or treated lumber can sometimes be affected by the level of surface texture, the presence of wax, treatments, or dust.
In situations where the primer adhesion is a concern due to substrate type, in-situ adhesion tests should be performed to determine suitability of substrate prior to full installation. If there are variations in the OSB surface, multiple tests may be required.
