KS-5800
Water-Based Adhesion Primer
DESCRIPTION
KNIGHTSHIELD KS-5800 is a VOC-compliant, water-based, one-component primer for low energy surfaces. It forms an elastomeric base for silicone topcoats. KNIGHTSHIELD KS-5800 has a dark color to help speed the water evaporation and drying of the primer in direct sunlight. The coating can be applied using brush, roller, airless spray or notched squeegee following by back rolling.
USES
KNIGHTSHIELD KS-5800 is recommended as an adhesion primer over surfaces where a topcoat direct-to-substrate adhesion test showed insufficient or questionable adhesion. KNIGHTSHIELD KS-5800 bonds to most low energy aged surfaces such as TPO and Kynar. It can also be used as a security measure over PVC and EPDM.
FEATURES/BENEFITS
- Adheres to most aged roofing substrates
- Maintains adhesion when top-coated even in ponded water areas.
- Highly elastomeric
- Can be applied by brush, roller, airless sprayer and notched squeegee with back roll
- Can be applied at ambient temperatures between 35° F (1.7° C) and 110° F (48.3° C)
PACKAGING
5 Gal. (18.9 L) Pails
55 Gal. (208.2 L) Drums – special request
SHELF LIFE
Twelve months from date of manufacture in the original, unopened container stored below 90° F (32° C). Subject to re-inspection thereafter. Store in dry, shaded conditions away from sources of heat or ignition.
APPLICATION
Surface Preparation … All surfaces to be primed must be clean, dry and frost-free. An 8-mil wet thickness at 77° F (25° C) and 50% RH will become surface dry in approximately 30 minutes and can be top coated with silicone as soon as the product does not transfer when touched with moderate to heavy pressure – typically after a minimum of 60 minutes. Times will be longer in cool climates, high humidity and in shady areas. Product remains tacky after full dry.
Mixing … Mix with a properly sized agitator (300 – 400 rpm) for a minimum of one minute to ensure an even consistency of coating is obtained without entrapping air.
Application Method … The temperature of the surface to be coated should be between 35° F (2° C) and 120° F (49° C) and environmental temperature should be at least 5° F (3° C) above the dew point prior to and during application.
It is recommended that KNIGHTSHIELD KS-5800 be applied using a ½” (12.7 mm) nap roller or an airless sprayer; however, brush and squeegee are also suitable methods of application. It is necessary to apply at a rate that will target 8 wet mils and achieve approximately 4 dry mils at all inspection points.
