The Red Rocks Amphitheater ADA Improvements, Phase 2
Nestled in the rugged foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Red Rocks Amphitheater is a venue unlike any other. Renowned for its natural acoustics and breathtaking views, it stands as a cultural icon and a favorite destination for music lovers. However, even iconic venues require maintenance and modernization to remain functional and accessible. As part of ongoing improvements, the Red Rocks Amphitheater embarked on the second phase of its ADA compliance upgrades. This project, which focused on replacing the waterproofing system above occupied spaces, demanded technical expertise, high-performance materials, and a collaborative approach.
Leading the design and planning for this project was Iron Horse Architects, based in Denver, CO, bringing their expertise to ensure the upgrades met both functional and aesthetic requirements.
GH Phipps Construction Companies, from Greenwood Village, CO, served as the general contractor, skillfully managing the execution of this multifaceted initiative.
Handling the waterproofing phase was A+ Waterproofing & Sealants, LLC, a Denver-based firm led by David Flores. With a solid reputation and over a decade of experience, the company was tasked with installing a new hot fluid-applied membrane system to ensure the longevity and integrity of the structure.
This case study highlights the collaboration between the project team, the careful selection and application of waterproofing products, and the innovative solutions implemented to meet the unique demands of this high-profile project.
A Complex Undertaking
The Red Rocks Amphitheater ADA Improvements, Phase 2 project was a vital initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility while preserving the venue’s historical and architectural significance. The scope of work involved the removal and replacement of an aging hot fluid-applied membrane system, which sits over occupied maintenance areas, such as concession stands, bathrooms, and other back areas. This type of work required not only technical precision but also a deep understanding of the site’s environmental and logistical constraints.
David Flores shared that his company was hired as the certified installer for the project. “We received a bid invite from the general contractor because we are W/MBE certified with the City & County of Denver,” he explained.
Their certification, combined with the company’s decade-long track record in waterproofing installations, positioned them as the ideal partner to take on the complex demands of this high-profile project.
Their team brought a hands-on approach, focusing on every detail to ensure that the new waterproofing system adhered seamlessly to the existing structure.
Overcoming Adversity
The project’s location presented immediate challenges. Red Rocks Amphitheater is situated in a natural amphitheater formed by massive rock outcrops, a setting that is as beautiful as it is unforgiving. The harsh weather conditions typical of Colorado’s foothills added another layer of complexity. Cold temperatures and unpredictable weather could have severely hindered progress, but the team’s choice of materials proved pivotal.
The waterproofing system selected for the project centered on W. R. MEADOWS’ HRM 714, a hot-applied rubberized asphalt membrane known for its durability and flexibility in low temperatures. This product allowed the team to work efficiently, regardless of the weather.
Cold weather was not an issue for this system,” noted Flores. “Unlike cold-applied membranes, which would have struggled under these conditions, the hot pour system allowed us to maintain productivity despite the weather.”
Logistics posed a significant challenge for the project. “The amphitheater is set on the side of the foothills, which made it difficult to position our hot melt kettle and perform the work,” Flores recalled. The hot melt kettle, essential for heating and applying the membrane, required precise placement to operate effectively. The venue’s steep terrain and limited space demanded meticulous planning and coordination. Adding to the complexity, the team also had to work within the constraints of Red Rocks’ busy event schedule, which left only a narrow window for construction activities.
The Application Process
Installing a robust waterproofing system involved several critical steps, beginning with the removal of the existing membrane. This process was essential to ensure proper adhesion of the new materials. Once the surface was prepared, the team applied the HRM 714 membrane, embedding layers of reinforcing fabric to enhance strength and durability. Protection and drainage layers, including PC2R PROTECTION COURSE and MEL-DRAIN™ 9055, were then installed to safeguard the system from hydrostatic pressure and physical damage.
The decision to use W. R. MEADOWS products was driven by both technical specifications and the company’s longstanding reputation for quality. David Flores remarked, “We’ve worked with W. R. MEADOWS products before, and their quality stands out. The cost and performance make them a preferred choice for projects like this.”
One of the most intricate aspects of the project was integrating the new waterproofing system with existing materials. “We had concerns about tying into other membranes, but the technical team at W. R. MEADOWS provided detailed solutions to ensure a seamless transition,” Flores said. This collaboration was crucial in maintaining the integrity of the entire waterproofing system.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of the project’s waterproofing aspect was largely due to the strong partnership between A+ Waterproofing & Sealants, LLC and W. R. MEADOWS, INC. Andrew Dowl, a sales representative from W. R. MEADOWS OF TEXAS, played a pivotal role, offering product recommendations and on-site technical support. His involvement helped the team navigate challenges and adapt to the project’s specific needs.
Working with W. R. MEADOWS was a collaborative effort,” Flores emphasized. “Their team was always available to provide guidance, and that made a significant difference in the outcome.”
The general contractor and other stakeholders also contributed to the project’s smooth execution, ensuring that all phases were coordinated effectively. The result was a seamless integration of the new waterproofing system, preserving the amphitheater’s structural integrity while meeting ADA compliance standards.
Reflecting on Success
Upon project completion, the new waterproofing system has performed exceptionally well, providing a watertight seal and contributing to the longevity of the amphitheater’s structure. “The performance of the system has been great so far,” Flores said. “Having the right materials and support was key to achieving this success.”
Working on a high-profile project like Red Rocks Amphitheater has had a lasting impact on A+ Waterproofing & Sealants, LLC. Flores reflected on the unique pressures and expectations that come with such a landmark project.
It’s rewarding to know that our work contributes to the preservation of an iconic venue. Currently, we are offering our clients W. R. MEADOWS’ HRM 714 in lieu of other hot fluid applied membrane because we liked the materials and continual support.”
Looking Ahead
As A+ Waterproofing & Sealants, LLC celebrates its 10th anniversary in February 2025, the company continues to build on its legacy of excellence. The Red Rocks Amphitheater project stands as a testament to their expertise and dedication. For Flores, his advice to those choosing between waterproofing systems is, “When choosing a waterproofing system, make sure it plays well with other products. It can be very costly if the waterproofing system can’t tie into another system or manufacturer.”
For those considering W. R. MEADOWS products, Flores highlighted their reliability and ease of specification. “The fact that their products are often pre-specified simplifies the process and ensures quality results.”
In the end, the Red Rocks Amphitheater ADA Improvements, Phase 2 project is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration, expertise, and the use of high-performance materials.
With the successful completion of this project, A+ Waterproofing & Sealants, LLC has solidified its position as a leader in the waterproofing industry, while W. R. MEADOWS continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing durable and reliable solutions. Together, they have ensured that one of the world’s most iconic venues remains accessible and protected for years to come.
