The work carried out had to be done to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Objective: Repair of cracks, construction joints, and concrete, as well as negative side waterproofing of the subway tunnel, shown in Figure 1 (above). Deteriorated concrete was repaired by MEADOW-CRETE GPS – a shrinkage compensated, concrete repair mortar – supplied by W. R. MEADOWS. The cracks were treated using flexible CEM-KOTE FLEX ST, a polymer cement coating, reinforced with REINFORCING FABRIC HD. The main issues were extensive cracking – shown in Figure 2 – and concrete walls coated with paint and tile adhesive residues – shown in Figure 1 (above).
The process of repairing the cracks is shown in Figure 3 (above). The surface of the concrete was completely cleaned by grinding, then water saturated and a spray application of CEM-KOTE CW PLUS (two coats). It was then wet cured for three days. Some areas, such as separate vaults next to the tunnel, were also painted after the CEM-KOTE CW PLUS was fully cured.
The hand application of CEM-KOTE CW PLUS is shown in Figure 4 (above). Figure 5 and Figure 6 (above) show the underground vault after application of CEM-KOTE CW PLUS and after painted CEM-KOTE CW PLUS.
Completed spray application of CEM-KOTE CW PLUS is shown in Figure 7 (above). CEM-KOTE CW PLUS and CEM-KOTE FLEX ST are unaffected by high humidity and water saturated substrate and can be applied under very strenuous conditions, such as existed on this project.
